About the breed
Originally a palace dog, the Shih Tzu's name means 'Lion Dog,' but its temperament is that of a loving companion.
Temperament
The Shih Tzu breed is known for its loving, playful, sociable, and intelligent nature. It is a relatively calm breed that does not require an extreme amount of exercise. Known for patience and love of children, making it an excellent family dog. They thrive on human companionship and dislike being alone.
Health & Genetics
The average lifespan of this breed is 10-18 years. Generally a healthy breed, but like all purebred dogs, it may have predispositions to certain genetic diseases. Attention should be paid to dental tartar and patellar luxation. Consistent preventative care and a high-quality diet are key to a long life.
Grooming Needs
Requires intensive coat care. Daily brushing is essential to prevent matting, and regular trimming is necessary. Regular checks of the eyes and ears, as well as nail trimming, are also important.
