About the breed
This giant breed is famous for its alpine rescue work.
Temperament
The Saint Bernard is known for its friendly, gentle, watchful, and calm temperament. It is a relatively calm breed that doesn't require extreme amounts of exercise. They are known for their patience and love of children, making them excellent family dogs.
Health & Genetics
The average lifespan of this breed is 8-10 years. Generally a healthy breed, like all purebred dogs, they may be predisposed to certain genetic diseases. For larger breeds, it is important to pay attention to the joints (hip dysplasia) and prevent gastric torsion with proper feeding. Consistent prevention and a quality diet are key to a long life.
Grooming Needs
This breed requires intensive coat care. Daily brushing is essential to prevent matting, and regular trimming is necessary. Regular checks of the eyes and ears, as well as nail trimming, are also important.

Care & Training
Trainability
Training requires patience and consistency. They are intelligent but can be stubborn. Positive motivation with treats works best.
Space & Financial Needs
Due to their size, they are best suited to a family home with access to a garden. They can be content in an apartment with enough exercise, but they require a lot of space. The financial demands for food and veterinary care are higher than for small breeds.
